Desktop Virtualization: Desktop as a Service: VMware vs Redhat

With desktop virtualization, you can solve multiple issues related to manageability

I always get excited about desktop virtualization as this innovation has really transformed a normal desktop way of management to a fully virtualized way of management.

With desktop virtualization, you can solve multiple issues related to the manageability of the current decentralized environment by virtualizing desktop operating systems, applications and user data, and decoupling these components from their underlying hardware. IT administrators can then centrally manage and provision these desktop components from the datacenter, creating a rapidly deployable private "desktop cloud" infrastructure.

Key Benefits:

  • Reduce operational costs by 50%
  • Simplify desktop and application management
  • Deliver rich user experiences on demand
  • Standardize on a common virtualization platform
  • Extend business continuity and disaster recovery to desktops
  • You can deploy desktop in few clicks and manage 100 of desktops from a single console.

There are many articles on desktop virtualization so I won't go deeper into that but  come directly to the main question: Which vendor to choose?

This is indeed a million dollar question, but let me present the implementation scenario from two market leaders: Red Hat and VMware.

VMware: VMware View is the industry's leading desktop virtualization platform, and the only purpose-built solution for delivering desktops as a secure managed service.

It comes with two editions: VMware View Premier and VMware View Enterprise as described in Figure 1.

Figure 1

The cost scenario
The purchasing option is very simple. You have two steps:

  1. Select either of the two product based on your requirement ie from VMware View Premier, and VMware View Enterprise.
  2. Number of users in pack of 25.

Carefully go through Figure 1 to freeze on the features you want and then select the price scenario to calculate the total cost.

Red Hat Desktop Virtualization
With Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization for Desktops, complete desktop environments are hosted as virtual desktops on servers located in a centralized datacenter. Users connect to these virtual desktops using either inexpensive thin clients or repurposed PCs.

There is only one product in the Red Hat Virtualization portfolio and it has all the features. The cost scenario is not that straightforward. The price scenario is as below:

  1. You have to purchase license cost for Red Hat virtualization for server. It means that, you will have servers that will host Red Hat hypervisor and it is where desktops will be hosted. The license is per socket based. i.e. if you have a server with two CPU sockets then you have two purchase two hypervisor license.
  2. You have to purchase Red Hat Desktop Virtualization subscription based on pack basis. One pack will have 25 users.

Both implementations has its own advantages and disadvantages but personally I feel that if you can plan properly Red Hat implementation can turn out to be quite cheap.

But the above equation can change based on the number of users and the complexity of the environment.

I can provide more details if anyone has more questions. You can send me email alerts for any question.
